Group Cohesiveness Scale (GCS)

 Group Cohesiveness Scale (GCS)

GCS , developed by Wongpakaran et al, is a scale to measure the cohesiveness of the group. GCS is a 7-item, 5-point Likert type scale in which the scores range from 1 - “strongly disagree” to 5 - “strongly agree”. In order to create this new scale, we adopted five items from the Engaged Sub-scale of Group Climate Questionnaire – in its short form. As for the cohesion sub-scale of TFI, only two out of eight items were used due to the fact that 97% of the variance in TFI cohesion was generated by only two items, these being “I feel accepted by the group”, and “in my group we trust each other”. The questions used are shown in Table 1. Note that in this study, the Thai version was used. The GCS used three different forms: a group member form, a leader or co-leader form and an observer form, and all three forms contained the same questions. The leader or co-leader form was used for inter-rater correlation of the GCS. The GSC yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.87, with a one-factor solution with excellent fit indices. A significant correlation was found between the Group Cohesiveness Scale, the Cohesion to Therapist Scale, and the Group Benefit Questionnaire.
