The Gratitude Inventory (GI), developed by Wongpakaran and Wongpakaran, is firmly rooted in the Thai cultural context and deeply influenced by Buddhism. It is based on the well-known quote from the teachings of Lord Buddha stating that "Gratitude is a signature of a decent person." This underscores the importance of gratitude in the culture, as even the Lord himself praised monks who took care of their parents. The GI is designed to capture this fundamental concept, emphasizing the essential practice of gratitude towards parents.
The Gratitude Inventory (GI) 's 6-item version (GI-6) stands out for its brevity and simplicity. Utilizing a five-point Likert scale, this version is meticulously designed for quick and effortless administration.
Based on a study conducted among 120 university students, Cronbach's alpha was an impressive 0.937, signifying high internal consistency. Additionally, factor analysis revealed a unidimensional construct. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling Adequacy was 0.819, and Bartlett's Test of Sphericity was highly significant (p < .001). Factor analysis further showed Eigenvalues of 3.841, explaining a substantial 76.82% of the variance. The factor loadings ranged from 0.816 to 0.936, with the scree plot indicating a robust one-factor solution.

In terms of concurrent validity, the GI-6 displayed a negative correlation with attachment avoidance (r = -0.295, p = .001) and a positive relationship with perceived social support (r = 0.272, p = .003). Notably, no significant correlation was observed between GI-6 and depression, anxiety, or stress.
Scoring Method:
-
Add the scores of items 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6.
-
Reverse the score for item 5. For example, if you marked "5," the score becomes "1"; if you marked "4," the score becomes "2."
-
Sum the scores from steps 1 and 2 to obtain the GI-6 score. The score should range between 6 and 30.
Interpretation:
A higher score indicates a higher level of gratitude or appreciation. There is currently no cut-off score.
